One of a kind

Edmonton is among the best spots on earth to collect solar power. The number of sunny days a year in addition to long cold winters is a particular combination that creates special conditions to maximize the harvest of solar power. Edmonton sunbeams are comparable to some places in Brazil and Edmonton winters comparable to any place close to the Arctic or the Antarctic, but not so many habitable places meet both factors.

This fact seems to be one more reason to think of Alberta as a leading player for a different energy path, far away from fossils-based economy. It is also a great opportunity for the University of Alberta for new research and better focus on the future.

In the meantime scientists from Georgia Institute of Technology are working on new revolutionary technologies to collect, store and make shifting to solar power cheaper and feasible: see first 3-D underground photovoltaic solar system
