Any steps made to reduce carbon emissions are aimed at increasing social welfare in society. For an economist that involves to keep markets efficient by avoiding government interference/control. The cap and trade solution is ideal from this point of view, but obviously has many flaws. But consider that a tax on carbon emission would most likely increase prices on anything that has a polluting production process, so then who would end up paying in the end? Ref. to what we talked about in class: this gives me even more reason to argue that education should be free so that we can educate geniuses that can invent better alternatives to our polluting habits!
